Cerastes, Dark Apostle

Cerastes is a Dark Apostle of the Word Bearers, a Chaos Space Marine Legion defined by its devotion to the Dark Gods.

His previous campaign on Legitur ended in disaster when his host was defeated by Palatine Aesura and the warriors of the Order of the Thorn.

But Cerastes survived.

Now he has returned with his faith intact and his desire for vengeance stronger than ever.

Return to Legitur

Legitur is a world dedicated to the written teachings of the Imperial Creed.

Its society endlessly produces enormous quantities of scripture, and its rulers consider the planet an exemplar of Imperial piety.

Towering paper hives dominate the landscape, monuments to a civilization built around the creation and preservation of sacred texts.

Yet beneath this appearance of absolute devotion lie secrets unknown even to the ruling Ecclesiarchy.

Cerastes knows those secrets better than most.

Legitur was once his home.

The Word Bearers

Few enemies are better suited to corrupting a world of faith than the Word Bearers.

Where the Imperium demands devotion to the Emperor, the Word Bearers preach worship of the Chaos Gods.

Cerastes doesn’t simply intend to conquer Legitur.

He intends to convert it.

His goal is to transform the world’s existing religious fervor into something darker, turning the population against its Imperial masters and spreading the worship of Chaos through revolution.

The Order of the Thorn

Standing against Cerastes are the Adepta Sororitas of the Order of the Thorn.

Led by the formidable Palatine Aesura, these Sisters of Battle have already proven themselves capable of defeating the Dark Apostle’s forces.

Cerastes’ return sets the stage for another confrontation between two radically opposed forms of faith:

• The Imperial Creed

• The worship of Chaos

Neither side intends to compromise.

Palatine Aesura

Palatine Aesura was responsible for crushing Cerastes’ previous host.

Now she and her Sisters must confront the returning Dark Apostle before he can transform Legitur into a stronghold of Chaos.

The rivalry gives the conflict a personal dimension alongside the larger struggle for the fate of the planet.

The Eightfold Bane

Central to Cerastes’ plans is the mysterious Eightfold Bane.

The Dark Apostle intends to resurrect it as part of his campaign to corrupt Legitur and overthrow the established Imperial order.

Whatever secrets lie hidden beneath the world’s paper hives may prove essential to determining whether his ambitions succeed.

A War of Faith

Apostle places religious conviction at the center of its conflict.

Both the Word Bearers and Adepta Sororitas are defined by faith, but they serve fundamentally opposed powers.

The story explores themes involving:

• Faith

• Corruption

• Revenge

• Religious fanaticism

• Chaos worship

• Revolution

• Imperial authority

• Hidden secrets

• Heresy

• Vengeance

The result is a battle fought not only for control of a world, but for the beliefs of everyone living upon it.

From Sacred Hate to Apostle

Cerastes previously appeared in David Annandale’s short story Sacred Hate.

Apostle brings the Dark Apostle back for a full-length story, continuing his conflict with Legitur and the Adepta Sororitas.

Readers familiar with the earlier story can continue Cerastes’ tale, while the novel expands the scope of his ambitions and his struggle against the Order of the Thorn.
