Castellan-Colonel Orysian Roane

Orysian Roane is a young and brash Cadian officer accustomed to allowing others to carry the heaviest responsibilities of command.

Then his chain of command is shattered.

Suddenly, the responsibility belongs to him.

Roane is elevated into a position for which he has little practical experience, leaving him responsible for soldiers who don’t necessarily respect his authority or share his Cadian approach to warfare.

A Ragtag Auxilia

Roane doesn’t inherit a disciplined formation of Cadian Shock Troops.

His new command is a collection of soldiers drawn from across the Imperium, built around a clan of abhumans who are treated with suspicion and contempt by many of the humans around them.

The regiment contains:

Abhumans serve the Imperium on battlefields throughout the galaxy, but their usefulness doesn’t necessarily earn them acceptance.

Auxilia explores this tension from within the Astra Militarum.

Roane must command soldiers who are simultaneously needed by the Imperium and despised by many of those they fight beside.

The situation forces him to confront assumptions about what makes a soldier valuable and what it actually means to lead troops who have little reason to trust those giving them orders.

A Clash of Military Cultures

Roane comes from Cadia, a world synonymous with discipline and military tradition.

His new regiment does not.

Different backgrounds, battlefield experiences, cultures, and tactical doctrines collide within the unit.

Roane initially attempts to hammer his soldiers into Cadian shape, but commanding this force may require him to understand what they already are rather than simply turning them into something familiar.

A Murderous Commissar

The regiment also operates beneath the gaze of a ruthless commissar who openly despises the soldiers under Roane’s command.

Instead of providing unity, the commissar becomes another source of pressure on an already fractured formation.

Roane must therefore contend with enemies outside the regiment while navigating dangerous internal politics and Imperial authority.

Abandoned by the Munitorum

The Departmento Munitorum provides little help.

Consistently overlooked by the Imperial bureaucracy, the auxilia must contend with the realities of fighting for an Imperium that appears to place little value on their survival.

The situation exposes some of the weaknesses beneath the enormous military structure of the Astra Militarum.

A World at Civil War

Roane has little time to solve his command problems.

The world around the regiment descends into a brutal civil war, forcing the auxilia into battle before it has truly become a unified fighting force.

Training, cultural differences, personal rivalries, and questions of loyalty must suddenly be set aside as the soldiers face their trial by fire.

For Roane, the conflict may determine whether his first true command will also be his last.
